Tribute to Paolo Borsellino italian magistrate killed by the mafia Palermo 19 jan 1940 19 jul 1992 I lived in a community wherein when I was 15 my classmate boasted about being son of a mafioso. And I envied him. Nowdays beyond that will be the conclusion of investigations beyond any sentences inquests had indirectly a cultural value just because they are spreaded popularized because people care about. Nowdays probably there are anymore youngs like me in Palermo who are 15 and envy the classmate son of a mafioso. I became judge because I had a very strong passion for civil law and I joined the Bench to become a specialist of it. Later the 4th of May 1980 it was killed captain Emanuele Basile and the examining magistrate Chinnici assigned to me the investigation. In the meantime my childhood friend Giovanni Falcone joined my office and from then I understood that my work had to be different: I chose to stay in Sicily and I had to make sense to this choice. Our problems were those whereof I started to deal almost by accident but if I loved this land I had to deal only with them. The Mafia is an unitary criminal organization with a management level structure that aims to wield in a land the same sovereignty that wields or should wield the State. The irreversible conflict with the State against whom Cosa Nostra is in substantial competition is solved by influencing the State from inside with infiltrations in public bodies. But I am optimist because nowdays I see that youngs Sicilians or not have a very different carefulness about the Mafia from the guilty indifference that I kept until I was 40. When these youngs will be adults they will have more strenght of react than my generation and I had it. [...] They are dies for us and we have a big debt towards them. We have to pay joyfully this debt proceeding with their work rejecting from the mafioso system even benefits we can obtain. Even helps recommendations jobs. Doing our duty. The fight against the Mafia the first problem to solve in our very beautiful and unfortunate land didn't be only a simple activity of repression but a cultural and moral movement that included everybody and especially young generations that are the most adapt to smell immediatly the beauty of the fresh perfume of freedom that does to reject the stink of moral compromise of indifference of contiguity and then of complicity. I remember the happyness of Falcone when in a short period of excitement he told me "people support us" and he didn't concern only to the comfort of the moral support of people gives to the action of the judge. It meant something more.
